Winterize the Plumbing With These Tips

Plumbing Tips for Fall and Winter

While it may seem a little early to start planning for the winter, now is the perfect time to start ticking off items on the checklist. One of the top priorities to help prepare the home for the winter will include making sure the plumbing is ready for freezing temperatures, and there is no time like the present to start planning ahead.

When water freezes inside piping, people can lose access to their water, and it can even cause the pipe to burst. This can be a major inconvenience, and dealing with the fallout of a burst pipe and the water damage it can cause can be costly. Instead of taking the chance, take advice from local experts and help prepare the plumbing for winter.

Install Pipe Insulation

Plumbers work hard to install piping in places where it won’t be vulnerable to low temperatures. However, there are times when there is no other choice than to install piping in places where it could freeze. In situations like these, pipe insulation is the way to go.

Pipe insulation is a cheap and easy way to help protect the piping. Not only does it offer some protection from freezing pipes, but it also has benefits such as helping maintain the water temperature, minimizing noise, and controlling the condensation as condensation corrodes the pipes and causes them to fail sooner.

Keep the Pipes Warm

sinkPipes are usually buried within insulated walls, especially walls that separate the interior from the exterior. However, in older homes with outdated insulation or poorly sealed walls, pipes housed within exterior walls can still fall victim to freezing. To overcome this potential problem, two main things need to be done.

First, the home must be kept warm when it’s cold outside. Turning up the thermostat and allowing the heater to do its job is a great way to do this. Another way to help keep the pipes warmer is to simply open the cabinets housing piping to allow the warm air to reach them.

Properly Prepare Outdoor Plumbing

outdoor faucetOne easy place to start when it comes to winterizing the plumbing is outdoors, where the elements are. Irrigation systems, outdoor faucets, and hose bibs can become vulnerable during the winter. To prevent problems, drain irrigation systems and outdoor faucets. Remove and empty all water hoses and store them properly indoors so they don’t stay hooked up to the hose bib all winter. If possible, shut off water service in these areas by locating shut-off valves and draining water from the lines. By taking these steps, homeowners can help protect the plumbing and prepare their homes for the winter.
